About us

The origin of the Kizilbash word comes from the fact that Sheikh Haydar's disciples are wearing their twelve red-headed hoods for their sides to be known. The disciples of the Safavid order along with Sheikh Haydar were known for their red hoods and so they were called Kızılbaş. When the Safavid state was established, the definition of Kizilbash was further enlarged. It was used by Safavid supporters in places like Anatolia, Iran, Iraq and Syria to describe themselves. At the beginning most of the supporters of the Safavid State consisted of Turkmen tribes. Together with that, there were also supporters with significant population of the Kurds,Talishes, Zazas and some other Iranian groups. In todays world there are people like Anatolian-Balkan Alevis/Bektashis, the some Turkic people inhabited in Iraq, Syria, Azerbaijan, Iran and in some Central Asian countries, Qizilbash people in Afghanistan and some other Iranian people considered as descendants of Qizilbash movement during the Shah Ismail Khatai era. One of the important goal of project is find the genetic relationship between these groups. We are trying to reveal the relationship between communities that have historical and cultural ties with the Kizilbash Movement and genetic history of the Kizilbash. As Kizilbash Dna Project, we aim to reveal concrete data about the genetic structure of communities called Kizilbas and investigate the genetic structure of communities that interacted with Kizilbash communities. We do not aim secterianism or any discrimination towards any ethnic or religious groups.
