FAQ

What DNA test should I do?
All project members should do an autosomal FamilyFinderDNA (FF-DNA) Test.
If you are male and your surname is Pomerantz, you should do a basic Y-37 DNA test in addition to the FF-DNA test.
If you are female and a direct descendant of female Pomerantz women, that is, your mother was a Pomerantz, her mother was a Pomerantz etc, as far as you can go, then you should do a mitochondrial-DNA test in addition to the FF-DNA test.

If my ancestors are not from Pruzhany or If I don't know where they are from, should I be in this group?
You are welcome to join the group and see if you match up to the Pruzhany families. Remember our ancestors moved around a lot so even if you don't think they are from Pruzhany, they may very well have been from there at some point or maybe their ancestors were.

Should my siblings and cousins do a DNA test if I already did?
This is a complex question but the basic answer is YES! But, that depends a little bit about which test we are talking about. As far as Mitochondrial and Y-DNA test, if one sibling has done the test, that is usually enough and you can save the money. As far as the autosomal FamilyFinder-DNA test, the more cousins and siblings do the test the better. That is because we are trying to workout fairly distant relationships (often 4th cousins or more remote). Statistically speaking, different cousins will receive different bits of the Pomerantz gene so some 4th cousins will share a lot of DNA while others will barely share any. Therefore the more cousins are tested, the more likely we will be able to see these relationships with confidence. So please encourage your family members to get tested and join our project!

Is there a way to buy a kit as a gift for someone who can't afford it?
We are working on that and there should be a way to do that soon. Please contact us directly if you are interested in donating or know someone who would like to do a test and needs help paying for it.

Can people tested in other companies be part of this project?
Yes, if they transfer their raw data to FamilyTreeDNA. Most of the major companies (MyHeritage, 23 and Me, GedMatch, Geni.com) allow you to export your raw DNA data into FamilyTreeDNA. It's fairly easy to do and we can help guide you if needed. Unfortunately, Ancestry.com does not allow for transfer of data.
