The main aim of the project is to establish whether there is a single origin for these surnames and close variants, and if not which families are related.
DNA analysis of male members of families as yet unconnected with the main "branches" will establish to which "branch" they belong or whether other "branches" need to be considered.
A secondary aim is to see whether similar surnames such as PONTING, POINTON & POINTEN might have a common origin, and we would be pleased if men of those surnames were able to contribute to this project.
The above aims can be filled using the Y-DNA 12 kit (12 markers). However to clarify the likely time at which groups had a common ancestor (e.g. to ascertain a likelt time period for the common ancestor for the Bruton & Midsomer Norton families) the higher marker number kits will need to be used.
