About us
Please note: this is actually the PETTY PROJECT. (Title correction has been requested.) As a father's surname is (normally) passed from father to son, so too is his Y-DNA. The Meacham-Mitchum Surname Y-DNA Project is oriented towards those Y-DNA testers who have - or whose known or suspected male ancestors have - the Meacham or Mitchum (or a related/differently spelled) surname. Although the Project also includes mtDNA and Autosomal DNA charts, very little work is being done with mtDNA at this time. The emphasis in this Project is firmly on Y-DNA - though documented conventional genealogies and at-DNA results can provide important supporting information, and their use/acquisition is strongly encouraged.
In the preferred chart for referencing and comparing members of the Project ("Y-DNA Results Colorized" - go to "Genetic Reports" and select Y-DNA Results Colorized), members are grouped first by major (ancient) haplogoup, and within major haplogroups, by "haplotypes" (in this context, the (slightly less ancient) genetic designation provided by FTDNA's low-level Y-DNA tests (Y-12 through Y-111)). Further refinements in the grouping comes via Big Y test results, which allows the comparison of more closely related testers' intermediate through their most recent Y-SNP mutations.
