Galicia or Halychyna (Ukrainian: Галичина,Halychyna; Polish: Galicja;Romanian: Galiția/Halici;German:Galizien; Russian:Галиция/Галичина, Galitsiya/Galichina;Czech:Halič; Slovak:Halič; Yiddish:גאַליציע,Galytsye; Hungarian: Galícia/Kaliz/Gácsország/Halics)is a historical region in Central Europe that currently straddles theborder between Polandand Ukraine.The area, which is named after the medieval city of Halych, was first mentioned in Hungarianhistoric chronicles in the year 1206 as Galiciæ. In the 18th century theGalician region was enlarged with territories now found within the modernPolish provinces of Małopolskie Voivodeship and Podkarpackie Voivodeship.

The nucleus of Galicia lies within the modern regions of westernUkraine: Lviv, Ternopil and Ivano-Frankivsk near the contemporaryUkrainian city of Halych.
