About us

The Oulton DNA Project seeks to determine the relationship between the various early Olton/Oulton families, and to characterize the Y-chromosome profiles for the early Olton/Oulton family groups.

While the Olton/Oulton surname is most common in Cheshire, pre-1700 records show Olton/Oultons living in Huntingdonshire, Kent, London, Middlesex, Norfolk, Staffordshire, Suffolk and Surrey, as well as Wales and Ireland. Do these early families share a common ancestor within recorded time or did they just choose the same place based surname in the 1400-1600s? Y-DNA testing of male line descendants of these various families may provide answers to this question.
