About us
This project welcomes anyone with a connection to the Ormond surname or its variants — including Ormand, Ormonde, and others. We are also particularly interested in testing male-line descendants of the Butler family, especially those with documented or suspected ties to the Earls of Ormonde, to explore whether there may be a genetic link between the Ormond and Butler lineages.
Irish Origins
The surname Ormond is historically tied to Urumhain (Ormond), meaning East Munster in Gaelic. This region formed a sub-kingdom of Munster in medieval Ireland. Initially ruled by the O'Kennedy family, it was later conquered by Anglo-Normans, who established the Earldom of Ormond under the powerful Butler dynasty. Some Irish Ormonds may descend from native Gaelic lines, others from Norman settlers or retainers.
Scottish Origins
A separate concentration of Ormonds appears in Angus (Forfarshire), particularly in Forfar, Rescobie, Glamis, and Dunnichen. Parish records show the name present here as early as the 1500s, often among working-class individuals in weaving and agriculture. The origins of this group are unclear, but they may represent:
An unrelated Scottish family,
A branch of the Irish Ormonds who migrated to Scotland,
Or even possible (though speculative) illegitimate descendants of the Butler Earls.
Our project seeks to test these possibilities using DNA evidence.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
To uncover the truth behind these lineages, we need more male-line Ormonds and related Butlers to take Y-DNA tests (preferably at 67 markers or higher, or Big Y for deep SNP analysis).
If you are:
A male with the surname Ormond or a known variant,
A male-line Butler with known or suspected connections to the Earls of Ormonde,
Or a researcher with knowledge of an Ormond line,
...please consider joining this project and contributing your DNA results and family tree information.
The more test-takers we recruit, the better we can map out the origins and relationships of this surname.
🧱 Scottish Ormond Focus: Breaking Through
Current research on the Angus Ormonds has a documentary brick wall at Charles Ormond, born circa 1776. Additional test-takers are needed to:
Confirm if all Angus Ormonds share a single male ancestor,
Establish sub-groups and lineages within the area,
Potentially connect them to Irish or Butler lines.
