About us

The Oppenheim / Oppenheimer name was adopted by Ashkenazi in Germany as early as the 16th Century. Though derived from the name of a village in the province of Hessen, Germany, families bearing the surname and its derivations spread throughout Western and Eastern Europe.

This project is open to those who have ancestral links to the Oppenheim(er) surname, whether paternal or maternal. In addition, we welcome participants whose ancestry is descended from one of the many dozens of surnames carried by known descendants of the pre-20th Century Oppenheim(er) families.

Back issues of Stammbaum, the only English language publication of German Jewish genealogy, have recently been made available online. The following articles provide a glimpse of the potential scope of this project:
