The Olmste(a)d Family Association is open to those of the Olmsted name and its variants, as well as people who have the name in their ancestry. Anyone who has an interest in this is also welcome. The two main lines are considered to be the James/Richard line and the Jabez of Ware line.

The James/Richard line is based on James Olmsted of Great Leighs, Co Essex, England, who arrived in America Sept. 16, 1632, on the ship "Lyon" with his two sons Nicholas & Nehemiah, his two nephews Richard & John, and his niece Rebecca.

Capt. Jabez Olmsted, who was born about 1690, has not had his origins discovered. He married Thankful Barnes in 1712.

Stephen Olmstead first appears in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania in the early 1800s, His DNA descendants do not match the James/Richard lines from Essex, England or the Jabez line from Massachusetts.
