Project for the Ogilvy surname - welcome!
Ogilvie Name Origins - Source: Dictionary of American Family Names ©2013, Oxford University Press
"Scottish: habitational name from a place near Glamis in the former county of Angus, which is first recorded c.1205 in the form Ogilvin. It is probably named from an early British form of Welsh uchel ‘high’ + ma ‘plain’, ‘place’ (mutated to fa) or ban ‘hill’ (mutated to fan)."
With these origins in mind, people with this surname (and its variants) may be able to trace their lineage back to this place. This Y-DNA surname project is an attempt to bring together various Ogilvy lines for analysis and comparison, with hopes for making a connection to these ancestral origins.
We recognize that genetic origins do not always match genealogical origins. There are many ways for us to inherit our surnames. Participants may carry the name and have DNA which connects to other lines, or have matching DNA with a different surname. All are welcome here as we work to understand and connect with our ancestral past.
Thanks for your interest and participation!
