Origins
The Oddone surname was created from the Germanic personal name Odo, or Otto. Oddi, is patronymic or plural form of the surname.

Ancient History
From the ancient and beautiful Papal States of Italy come may of the most important and influential Italian surnames. Until the 12th century, Surnames were nearly unheard of. People only had one name because that was all that was required to distinguish people from one other. As the population grew, however, it became necessary to give people an extra name to distinguish them from one other. At first, these names were individual and were not passed on from father to child, but eventually this practice also caught on and surnames became hereditary. At first, surnames were taken almost solely by members of the nobility. Later, surnames became popular among the common folk in large citis, where the need for a mean of distinction was greater then in the country. Eventually, even country folk took surnames and by the 15th century, nearly everyone had one.

The name Oddone was traced to its source in Perugia or anciently Perusia, a city in Italy, Capital of the province or Perugia. Prusia took part of a rebellion in 295 B.C. and was reduced with the exceptions of the temples Vulcan and Juno. In the 9th century, A.D the city was a papal territory but remained true to the Guelphs. Records are found in 1280, when Oddo Oddi was mayor or Parma. from this family came two mayors in Parma: Ungaro in 1291 and Marolo in 1293. To be recorded at this time, at the beginning of recorded history, was itself a great distinction and indicative of noble ancestry.

Spelling Variations
Nearly all European surnames have several spelling variations; because only scribes and church officials could read and write at the time, names were usually spoken, not written and therefore had no fixed spelling and were as they were pronounced. Italian surnames have a disproportionaltely large number of variations in comparison to names from other languages. The names Oddi, Oddo, Odda, Odi, Oddone, Oddoni, Odone, Otto, Oddini, Ottoni, Odino, Ottela, Ottobelli, Ottolino, ottinare, all variations on the name Oddone and all share the same origin.

Early History
The Papal States were held by the roman Catholic Church. It has owned the land since the fourth century, but had no governing powers over the land for a long time. the regions which have been held by the Church have varied often over the course of history, but have included Rome, the Apennines, Umbria, Tuscany and the Po Valley. the Papal States contain many of the most important cities in Italy; in particular, they contain Rome, capital of Italy and former capital of the Western Roman Empire.

Though the church owned the land from the fourth century onwards, it only began to gain temporal power during the Lombardic occupation of northern Italy. in 754, Pope Stephen II enlisted the help of the Franks to depose the Lombards, who were encroaching on papal territory and succeeded in ousting the Lombards from northern Italy.

Even during the reign of Frankish Emperor Charlemagne, the political power of the Popes was still not extensive. In 962 the Germanic leader Otto I ousted the Lombards a second time and became the Forst Holy Roman Emperor. Later, in the IIth century, the Normans came to control southern Italy, which had remained under Lombard and Byzantine control until that point. During the state of chaos which ensued, the Popes had a chance to size some political power and prestige. They maintained strong political control for over a century before it began to slip somewhat. Because of its heavy taxation, the church lost popularity among the people. There were numerous territorial disputes between the Papacy and the Holy Roman Empire and the two struggled for power. In 1127 the Emperor was forced to surrender the right to elect popes to the college of cardinals.

Meanwhile, independent city-states were developing in northern Italy. In the late 12th these city-sates increased their power by allying themselves under the name of the Lombard League and crushed the Hohenstaufens. The Oddone family originated in Perugia where they held a family seat. They branched into Sicily, Bologna, and Padova where they held lands and estates. Fron their early beginning, for the next few centuries, the family name also acquired other interests as branches of this fine by the many conflicts of the region, the economics, or better opportunities as they pursued religion, politics or acquired better estates. Polozzi became Captain of the Guard in Sicily in 1567. The family entered into the nobility in Padova in 1818.

The 16th century saw further territorial disputes and much of the Papal States were divided among the important ruling families of the Estensi and Farnese. After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, there was a growing movement for Italian national unity and independence.
