TE IRA TANGATA MĀORI DNA PROJECT

DNA test results can be used to make connections with known and unknown whānau, hapū and iwi


How to view your autosomal DNA matches within the Te Ira Tangata Māori DNA Project

  1. Sign in to your FTDNA account

  2. On your account dashboard (main page), click on the myDNA menu, select Family Finderthen select Advanced Matches

  3. On the Advanced Matches page, tick the box next to Family Finder

  4. Use the drop down menu next to Show Matches For and select NZ_Maori_DNA

  5. Click on the orange Run Report button


How to add your earliest known direct-line paternal and maternal ancestors and their country of origin

  1. Sign in to your FTDNA account

  2. On your account dashboard (main page), click on the drop down menu next to your name (top right corner)

  3. Select the Account Settings menu

  4. Click on the GENEALOGY tab, then click on the Earliest Known Ancestors tab

  5. Enter the names of your earliest known Direct Paternal Ancestor and Direct Maternal Ancestor, as well as their (can be approximate) birth and death dates

  6. Enter the Country of Origin for both tūpuna/ancestors. There is an option to select either New Zealand or New Zealand (Māori)

  7. Click on the orange SAVE button

This group is only for:

  1. Māori from Aotearoa who have already DNA tested and have tūpuna Māori, regardless of whether their whakapapa Māori is supported by their DNA test results or not. 

  2. Anyone whose DNA test results indicate that they are Māori from Aotearoa, whether or not they knew they had this whakapapa before DNA testing.
