About us

Welcome to the Nowicki Family Name Project!

The Nowicki surname is a family name of Central and Eastern European and Jewish origin.  It is particularly associated with Poland and areas formerly associated with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It remains among the top 20 most frequent surnames in Poland today.  The name is adjectival and has as its root the word nowy, meaning "new".  It may also refer to a geographical origin in a similarly named place (eg. Nowice). However, there also is an explicitly Jewish-Ashkenazic Nowicki-Tradition from former Galicia, Poland. As a Jewish surname it is derived from the Hebrew word "nevuchim" (נבוכים), which refers to members of the Levite tribe. This name is commonly found among Jews in Poland, Belarus, and Ukraine.

Feel free to join and participate in this project, to find out more about your ancestry.

The Nowicki Project is a Y-DNA surname project designed to recruit and organize men with the Nowicki surname or one of its variants, as well as those who believe their direct paternal ancestor may have carried the Nowicki surname.  The goal of the project is to identify common patrilineages, geographical distribution patterns, and Y-DNA haplotype/haplogroup patterns.

All men with a variant of the Nowicki surname or whose ancestor may have carried the Nowicki surname are encouraged to join the project.
