About us
This project is designed to use YDNA from males born with the Noe or Noah surnames for the purpose of finding common ancestors. The expectation is to find a connection to families across the world. From the America's across the Atlantic ocean throughout Europe. Many Noe men entered the New World via New York City and have spread from there throughout the United States. We also find Noe families living within Pennsylvania and Virginia in the beginning of the 1700's, who's country of origin has yet to be located. Many more families have immigrated to the Americas since.
People carrying the surname Noe/Noah can be found as far West as England and as far East as Hungary in Central Europe, as well as Southern Europe from Italy over into Spain. And of course living within North, Central and South America.
According to the Dictionary of American Family Names ©2013, Oxford University Press, and edited by Professor Patrick Hanks, the surname can be located within the following countries during medieval times and in some places earlier.
"English, German, Dutch, French (Noé, Noë), Spanish (Noé), Catalan (Noè)"
I say "located" because Noe isn't native to Germany, England, Netherlands or Belgium. Speaking within a language point of view. At least not that I have found yet.
I have also found the Surname being carried by Jewish and non-Jewish families across the European Continent. It is also carried by Huguenot families. This is found on Huguenot registers within England.
My belief is that the Surname moved out across Western, Northern and Central Europe after the Spanish Inquisition was enforced by decree in 1492 and 1501. The surname further expanded out of France during the Expulsion of Protestants in the 16th and 17th centuries. That seems to be when a large influx of the surname Noe is found in Germany.
One of my hopes is to track these family migrations throughout Europe and into the America's. And if we are lucky, learn something new from one another.
All are Welcome!
(Please be advised this project is opened to those who carry a form of the surname Noah/Noe. Or those whom match within a genealogical time frame with members of said surname.)
