About us

The goal of the Newlin Y-DNA surname project is to help members use their Y-DNA results in order to find or confirm their male-line ancestors.  You can help by providing all the information you know so far.  It is especially helpful to fill in your Earliest Known Ancestor information on your profile.  It is also helpful to provide your pedigree information or family tree, as far as you know it.

One of the Newlin surname lines in the project is the cluster of people who are descendants of Nicholas Newlin (~1629-1699), a Quaker who immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1682 with his wife and 3 of their 5 children.  They had been living in Ireland, but it is believed that he was born in England. We would love to find male relatives in England who share the same Y-DNA (probably they would be descendants of his grandfather or great-grandfather).  The male Newlin line in the U.S. is descended from one of the sons that immigrated with him, Nathaniel Newlin (~1665-1729).  The other son who immigrated, John Newlin (~1675-~1695) appears to have died before marriage or having any children.  The oldest son, Nicholas Newlin (~1660-1682) stayed in Ireland and was married soon after his parents left for the U.S.  He conceived a son, but died in Nov. 1682 before the son was born.  That son was also named Nicholas Newlin (born ~Feb. 1683).  We would love to find male descendants of him in Ireland or wherever they may be.  The Y-DNA haplogroup for the Newlin descendants of Nicholas Newlin is E-M35 (also called by other more downstream labels).

Another Newlin line in the project is the cluster of people who are descended from William Nowlan/Newlan.  They have the haplogroup R-M269.

There are other similar surnames such as Newlin, Newlan, Newlon, Newland, Newlands, Newlen, and Newlyn.

There are a cluster of people who are as yet "ungrouped".  Another goal of the project is to assign them to groups based on the Y-DNA markers shared.

Everyone is encouraged to eventually upgrade to the BigY-700 test.  It is pricey, so wait for a sale and save up if you need to.  The amount of information contained in your Y-DNA that is examined in the Big-Y test is far above the amount tested at the introductory levels of Y-67 and Y-111.  It will enhance your understanding of your Y-DNA and it will contribute to the body of knowledge about the "tree of mankind" for the Y-chromosome.
