About us

The goal of the U* project is to identify new, previously unknown daughter groups of Haplogroup U.

Haplogroup U is estimated to have origins in the near east or southwest Asia some 50,000 years ago.  It currently has 9 named daughter groups including U1 through U9 (note that haplogroup K is included in U8).

It is likely that most people who test as haplogroup U actually below to one of the already named daughter groups of U, and that FTDNA was not able to identify the daughter group because of unusual mutations or back mutations.  The project administrators have attempted to predict the daughter group for most people in the U* project, however, an upgrade to the full genome FMS or "Mega" test is needed to confirm the prediction and identify the lowest level haplogroup. It is also possible that there remain new, undiscovered daughters of U.  The FMS/Mega upgrade is needed to determine if project members belong to an already named U daughter group, or if they belong to a new U haplogroup.
