About us
The Mossner Family DNA Project is seeking Mossner family members for Y-DNA testing. This Project seeks to identify additional descendents of Mossner families which originated during the 16th Century in the area of Germany known as Franken (between the cities of Nürnberg and München) and which was later part of the Kingdom of Bavaria in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.
Fourteen generations of Mossner descendents have been traced down to the present (2003). In the 18th century, one family member in the 6th generation, Johann Matthias Mossner, married twice. Descendents from his first marriage in 1749 to Apollonia Kuhnlein have remained mostly in Germany to the present day. Descendents from his second marriage in 1780 to Eva Marie Rüssler emigrated from Mäbenberg, Mittelfranken, Bavaria to Frankenmuth, Michigan, USA during the period 1850 to 1854. Substantial genealogy and history of the Mossner Descendents in America exist today, however, very little genealogy and history of the descendents from the first marriage who remained in Germany have been reported and documented.
Through this DNA testing and through sharing of family history information, this Project hopes to identify, trace and connect together the family histories of additional Mossner families in Germany, The United States and other countries. Alternate spellings of the Mossner surname are encouraged. When arranging for Y-DNA testing, the Project encourages Y-DNA testing at the 37-marker level. While Y-DNA is found only in the male species, female Mossner family members are encouraged to signup male Mossner members – Father, Uncles, brothers, cousins.
