About us
Welcome to the MORTON/MOURTON family DNA project. We welcome all Morton participants who are interested in exchanging DNA results and information. While we welcome all, a male MORTON is required for testing the Morton line since the y-dna is passed basically unchanged from male to male for generations. This project began as a six-member group who trace their lineage to a George W Mourton, b 1808, of the southern Morton's who came from NC/VA to MO, with a possible TN connection. That family intermarried with Nunn, Stinson/Stephenson, Whitaker, Brunson, Spears. An additional Morton line is possibly of Scottish, , Irish or English descent with the oldest known ancestor as Richard Morton who died in Hatfield, MA in 1710. This line moved west into New York, Vermont, Michigan and some lines into Canada by 1840. An apparently unrelated line is descended from George Morton of Plymouth, MA (1585-1624) who is possibly related to the ancient Morton family from Austerfield, Yorkshire, England. A Morton line that shares the same haplogroup with the George Morton descendants, but are not genealogically related, seem to be associated with Sheffield, England.
