About us

 March 2021

There are now six BigY tests completed for the I-L161 group and another one pending. Currently, the most recent SNPs shared by the six are I-Y32297, I-A14890, I-A14891 and three others. An estimate of TMCRA (time to most common recent ancestor) gives a range of about 600-800 years ago or about 20 to 27 generations, assuming 30years per generation. A SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) is a change or mutation which occurs at a particular location in DNA.

The six can be split in to four separate branches, each with its own terminal (most recently occurring SNP) SNP, apart from the member whose terminal SNPs is stillI-Y32297/I-A14890.

The three branches descending from I-Y32297 as defined by their terminal SNPs are,

1.      I-Y82491, found in two members with connections to South Kilkenny and Waterford

2.      I-FT86615, found in three members with connections to Tipperary and Limerick

3.      I-FT86840, two of the members who have the SNPs I-FT86615 also share the SNP  I-FT86840 and have their family origins in Limerick.
