The Morphew Y-DNA database allows Morphew and Murphy researchers to check Morphew ties. Morphew is English, not Irish. The principal colonial Morphew family in America was J. Morphew (~1725 - <1783) + Mary Burk (~1732 - >1802). They were probably married in 1749 Augusta County, Va. before moving to Guilford County, N.C. about 1754. They had two sons: James Morphew (~1750 - <1783) and Silas Morphew (~1752 - 1807) with many descendants. The w in Morphew sometimes falls silent leading to a Murphy spelling, occasionally perminent. Other Morphews migrated to America, but changed to Murphy. New Zealand and Australian Morphews (various spellings) need to have their y-dna tested.
