About us

September 22, 2008. We have our first official project member, Gary!  Here is his information: Willis McNew (born 5/25/1816), wife Susanna LaMasters (born 7/27/1815). Willis' parents were likely Jeremiah (born 1783), wife Nancy Dunbar. That link appears to go back to Scotland's JEREMIAH MACKNEW/MACKNUE. However, beyond Willis is conjecture at this point.

We do not have any members yet, but Bob McNew, who tested with another company (Genebase), has passed along his test results to me. Here is the information for the line: Richard McNew (1788-1860) and Elizabeth Hoke who had a land grant with brother Zedekiah dated 1838; Richard McNew, Jr. (b. 1825 Ripley Co., Indiana; d. 1901 Tipton Co. Indiana) m. Elizabeth Jane Hanna. This line is said to go back to JEREMIAH MCNEW, born 1640 in Scotland.
NOTE: SEE THE  "RESULTS" PAGE (using the drop down menu at the top) FOR BOB MCNEW'S MARKERS.

Notes:
David McNutt (18 years old 1860 Va Census) who married Elizabeth Monk (same census page)on 18 Jan 1864. My wife has been told that she is a descendant of David McNew and Elizabeth Monk also supposedly from Virginia before moving to Tennessee in 1873.
I guess that would make you and my wife third cousins (the same Great-great grandfather David McNutt). One of the names that convinced me that we were tracking down the correct Elizabeth was the name Lafayette or Fayette. There was also a Fayette Monk living in Russel County Va (1850)who was likely her cousin and may have been who she named her son after.
Well if she is from Elizabeth Monk and her husband David she IS NOT a McNew. My family came from David and Elizabeth, my aunts have searched for YEARS and YEARS trying to figure out where David McNew fit in with the McNew. Well after some digging on the internet I found the website that states David McNutt married Elizabeth Monk! So I started searching with the McNutts and ran across a gentleman who told me and my aunts a story about David McNutt getting in trouble with the law and chnaged his name to McNew.
David McNutt was the son of Robert and Mary (Kates) McNutt. He was my G. Grandfathers brother. But for some reason he changed his name to David McNew. But he fought in the Civil War in the same unit as my G. Grandfather. Company
D; 37th VA infantry. In the war he still went by David McNutt. We do know he lived near A family of McNews. But he Married Elizabeth Monk. He was from Scott County, VA This David McNutt and David McNew are one in the same. I
hope this clears up any of the mystery.
