The Matney male Y-chromosome is no longer being actively studied within this project. Most of the Matney males in this project have added their kits to the Mattingly Project.
The Mattingly-Matney DNA Surname Project has shown, except for non-parental events, that Matney males descend from Cezar Mattingly, youngest son of Thomas Mattingly I. No Matney paternal lineage has been found as descendants of Thomas Mattingly II, older brother to Cezar Mattingly.
If you are a Matney male and your Y-chromosome is positive for SNP Y14083, then you descend from Cezar Mattingly.
The Matney paternal lineages studied by the Mattingly-Matney DNA Surname Project include:
- The Genetic Descendants of Walter Mattingly/Matney Sr.
- The Genetic Descendants of Clement Allen (Mattingly) Matney
- The Genetic Descendants of John Matney
Some Mattingly genealogists believed there was no connection between the Mattingly and Matney families. Consequently, there is no mention of the Matney lineages in the published Mattingly genealogies. However, the genetic evidence proves these two families are genetically connected.
Tradition within the Matney family states the surname was changed due to a religious split in the families. The Protestant families wanted to differentiate themselves from their Catholic cousins so they shortened the family surname from Mattingly to Matney to achieve that goal.
