About us

All Lines will be listed by Earliest Known or Assumed Ancestor.  All of us hope that eventually all families or lines participating in the Marsalis and Variant Spellings DNA Project AND the recently added John Edeson/Edison Project will be listed on this Patriarch page.

Participation in the DNA Project is not a requirement for listing on this page, but we will indicate families who have a male representing them in the DNA Project.  If you are a Marsalis or a variant spelling through a maternal line we welcome your lineage posting at the Pedigree Forum and we will transfer the tree here.

Thanks to DNA we have recently discovered a common ancestor for Marselis and Edison. This is a history changing event as we eagerly await findings on the origins of JOHN EDESON, great grandfather of THOMAS ALVA EDISON, America's own "Wizard of Menlo Park" (now Edison, NJ) and history's 4th most prolific inventoer.

We welcome all who descend from John EDESON/EDISON through a son or a daughter to post your pedigree - whether you test or not.

This PATRIARCH Page is edited and corrected as new VERIFIED Information is found. (See John aand Prudence Griffen Marsalis)

MARSALIS/MARSELIS/MARCELIS/MERSELIS/MARSEILLES, MASALIS,MASALES,MARSALAS, MARSELAS and Other Variant Spellings.........

Our Marsalis family began in the U. S. on May 9, 1661 with the arrival into New Amsterdam (New York) of the ship  DE BEVER
Passenger list : "Pieter Marcelis/ Marselis, from Beesd, with wife, 4 children, 13, 6, 4, and 2 years old and 2 servants"  --Holland Year Book 1902
According to the Holland Society Yearbook 1915 Pieter settled at Bergen, N.J. and died there with his burial recorded in the Bergen Dutch Church on September 4, 1682.

Within the last years there has been confirmation of Marcelis Pieters' origins in Beesd, Netherlands.

The Message Boards for Marselis and Marsalis at Genforum and at ancestry.com have much information.

VARIANT Names are spelled as found on various records and some will reflect the Dutch patronymic system.

1 Pieter Marcelis and his wife ( Elizabeth LNU) and 4 children arrived 1661 into New Amsterdam.  He died  4 Sep 1682 Bergen, NJ.
 2. Marselis/Marselisen Pieterse (as commonly written) b 1656, Netherlands, d 23 Oct 1747, NJ m  Pieterje Van de Voorst the daughter of Ide Cornelissen Van Voorst and Hilletje Jans.

Ide/Edo ran as a First Name through several Marselis branches and has no English equivalent. Several different spellings commonly found in early records are Ide/Iden/Idea/Ydes/Edo/Eden/Edea. It is pronounced as "E-da" or "E-duh"

The name "Ide" entered the Marcelis/Marselis family by Pieterje Van Voorst and Marselis Pieterse naming a son after her father Ide Cornelissen Van Voorst.  According to the Dutch patronymic system a name like John Edeson could be interpreted as "John son of Edo/Ide"

CORNELIUS VAN VOORST, b.ca.1580 – d. either late 1638 or early 1639 probably at Ahasimus /Jersey City, married VROUWTJE IDES. C.V.V may well be labeled as "the first Jersey man". Much history is available on him.

Their son IDE CORNELISSEN VAN VOORST, b. ca. 1626 is said to be the “1st native white male to have been born in New Netherlands, d. 12 -28 -1683.  He married 10 -18 -1652 HILLETJE JANS, b.ca. 1630 and died 12 - 18- 1705.

One of their daughters was named PIETERJE VAN VOORST (bap. 9 Oct 1659). She married in 1681 MARSELIS PIETERSE, a son of our  known ancestor the immigrant PIETER MARCELIS/MARSELIS and ELIZABETH LNU

3 Ide Marselis born 1690 (Baptism NY Dutch Church and his brother Peter were their known 2 sons.)

   married 1st Maritie Cornelis Coddemis/Cadmus April 23, 1713.

Now known are a Marcellus Ideson and a  Cornelius Ideson/Edeson who were grandsons of Maritie Cornelis Cadmus' parents  according to an estate paper.  In various records Cornelis' last name was spelled Idensse, Edesen, Eidese, Ideson, Idesen and Ydese.

Maritie Coddemis/Cadmus* must have died. No other record has been found for her.

There are church records for marriage and the baptisms of children of Cornelius Idesen/Edeson and Dirje Vreeland.

There are mentions of Marcelis Idesen as a witness in baptismal records.

YDES/Ides, MARSELES married Femmetie Doolhagen, Nov 21, 1741,  2nd  Reformed Dutch Church, Passaic.  Was this Marcelus Idesen? Were Ydes/Ides and Femmetje parents of John Edeson/Edison?  (Femmetie is sometimes Aanglicized as Febe or Phebe)

(After the Tory/Loyalist John Edison left NJ and moved to Canada there is a Marshall on a list with him. Marcellus/Marselis is Germanic in origin and could be anglicized as Marshall.)

It is assumed that Ide Marselis married FIRST COUSINS.  His two wives – (1) Marritie Cornelese Coddemis/Cadmus and (2) Arriaentie Bras-- were the daughters of  sisters Maritie KOEMANS and  Geertie KOEMANs who were the probable daughters o of Lucas Koemans and Arriaentie.   (Research by SRM.)

By July 6, 1718 Ide Marselis and 2nd wife  Arriaentie Bras baptised their son "Harmanus"/Harman  Records at the Reformed Dutch Church, Hackensack, N.J.

4 Harmanus/Harman Marselis baptized 6 July 1718 at Hackenscak Dutch Church, left a will Dec 1747, Piscataway, Middlesex NJ. He married Hannah Hutchins Marselis Robins/Robbins. She was born Dec 10, 1723 and died Sept 11, 1792 near Bound Brook, Somerset Co, NJ.  Hannah was the daughter of (Jacque) James Hutchins and Magdalene Pintard.  Hannah was the sister of Mississippi planter Anthony Hutchins, a founder of Natchez environs, and the sister of Thomas Hutchins, America's 1st and only Geographer.

(After Harman's early death Hannah Hutchins Marselis married William Robbins/Robins and had several more children. The known names from family letters are Charity, George, William Jr.)

#4 Harman and Hannah Marselis had 2 sons John (#5 below b. 1745) and Peter (born 1747 ) Peter's line later spelled the name as Marseilles and moved from NJ to Pennsylvania. Peter left a diary of his travels to the Southlands and many letters as well as 2 wills - one unexecuted. It is Peter's great granddaughter Lillie Marseilles Saxman, b 1866,  who first began Marselis/Marseilles family research about 1930. The research was resumed in the 1950s and 1970s on. Most of the early information was compiled by Tempe Fenn Crosby and several other Marsalis descendants in Mississippi and Canada and also compiled into a book titled A SEARCH FOR POLLY.  Thanks to the Internet much progress has been made in the last decade.  Family Tree DNA has opened doors that are priceless.

  5.John Marselis/Marseilles/MARSALIS* ( b Sept 13, 1745, d 22 Oct 1805 Somerset Co, NJ) mar. Aug. 9, 1767 Prudence GRIFFEN (b May 10, 1750)  John and Prudence (Prudy) had sons  Peter Hutchins Marsalis (b 1773)., Ephraim Marsalis (b 1776, d 1812, MS) and John H. Marsalis ( b 1786, d 1798 age 13, NJ) and daughters Martha b 1768, d at 9 mos and Sarah/Sally. b 1772. *(An old torn out Bible Page received 10/24/2014 has confirmed this information)

6 Peter Hutchins Marsalis,  born Aug 10, 1773,  prob. Bound Brook NJ , died July 1846 Amite Co, MS,  married Mary Magdalene Gordon in either NC or Georgia. The Marsalis Cemetery on the site of their former plantation in Amite County, MS is currently being restored in an effort led by Thomas Wixon (Marsalis descendant) and William (Bill) Marsalis and others. Several Marsalis descendants have contributed to the expenses. All the Marsalises who have tested are direct descendants of one of Peter (Hutchins) H.'s 6 sons. Peter Hutchins Marselis and his descendants adopted the variant MARSALIS spelling.

Peter Hutchins Marsalis and Mary Magdalene (Polly) Gordon are the common progenitors for all the mostly Southern lines surnamed MARSALIS

LINEAGE 1...........SURNAME EDESON/EDISON

The earliest documented ancestor of the Edison family is JOHN EDESON/EDISON who married  Sarah Ogden, the daughter of Samuel Ogden and Phebe Baldwin,  on 10 October 1765 at Hannover Presbyterian Church in Morris Co, New Jersey.   Although family tradition has held that John was born in the Netherlands ca. 1727, recent research including DNA sampling, suggests that John is more likely to have been born in New Jersey after 1741.  To date, no definitive documentation has been discovered to confirm John’s birth or the births of his children.  The known children of John and Sarah Edison are Samuel, Adonijah, Mary, Thomas, Catharine, Sarah and Moses all born in New Jersey and Margaret, born in Nova Scotia.  The earliest documentary evidence of John Edeson/Edison is his marriage to Sarah Ogden.  However, considerable documentation survives surrounding his capture,  imprisonment and exile arising from his service as a United Empire Loyalist during the American Revolution.  John Edison is perhaps best known for his role in the American Revolution and as the Great-Grandfather of the American Inventor, Thomas Edison. (Info by Steve E. Edison)
