About us

There have been at least a few different male-lines identified with the surname.

Of the six Y-DNA results known to the project admin:
  • two Lally's that can trace their roots back to Galway are not a close match with other known surname results
  • four individuals carrying the surname have tested positive for the R-M222 SNP associated with the Ui Niall and Connachta Dynasties
SNP's in the non-recombining* region of the Y-Chromosome for the most part are one off mutations that unambiguous identify individuals as being descended along the direct male line from the ancestor where this mutation occurred. The Y-DNA STR results in other projects testing positive for the R-M222 SNP suggest a common ancestor less than 2000 years back, so there is a reasonable likelihood that four of the six surname results are related within a genealogical time-frame. STR results within the surname for those tested above 12 markers indicate that a common ancestor could be fairly recent so this may simply be the result of a large recent branch accounting for a significant portion of those carrying the surname. Further results testing to at least 37 markers (with 67 recommended for better clarity within the group) are needed to indicate with much confidence the nature of this connection.

*note - the area of the Y that was thought to not recombine with the X-Chromosome has been shown recently to very rarely recombine with the X, so there is technically no part of the Y where recombination never occurs.
