About us

Welcome! You may have guessed, this project is for those who share the family/surname, Maher, Mehar, Mahir, Meher, Mehr, Mahar, and other similar spelling variants. You could be from Punjab/Sindh, Afghanistan, Persian, Arabian, Turkish, Parsi, Indian ethnicity is of no consequence. However if you're Irish, you may still join but the project's aim is to focus on Individuals and their Y/MtDna Haplogroup from those areas so that we can dissect study Paternal/Maternal tendencies pertaining to the surname(s). I'm well aware of the "Maher" Irish surname, but it's established that it is quite different from the name(s) I'm implying. There are a few ideas of were the name originates, The first being from "Mithra", a Zoroastrian religious/divinity icon (I'm not Zoroastrian). May also refer to a Sun/Fire attribute. Another may refer to the Mehar's from Punjabi/Sindh Clan from Dadu District bordering Balochistan. Mahir, is also Arabic for a Skilled/Professional person. There are also Mahars, from Maharashtra in Southern India. I've also read that there are those with the name Meir/Meyer/Mayar, who are of Jewish descent.
