Macon County Alabama PioneersDNA Project

Welcome to the Macon County, Alabama Pioneers DNA project web site.  If you are a descendant of early settlers ofMacon County, Alabama then

Manyof the early settlers of Alabama arrived from Virginia, Maryland, NorthCarolina or South Carolina, through Georgia along the Federal Road.  The Federal Road was a horse path at first, constructed around 1800 bythe US government to carry mailbetween Washington, D.C. and New Orleans.  The path, which led through present day MaconCounty, merged with an ancient Creek Indian trail that went from Tukabatchee, near Tallassee, Alabama, to Pennsacola, Florida. The government’s trail and theancient Indian trail merged near Line Creek, near present day Mt. Meigs.  Line Creek—still the western boarder of MaconCounty--is also where the path exited Creek Indian territory

Afew years later the mail path was widened to accommodate wagons, and it becameknown as the Federal Road.  The FederalRoad became the interstate highway of the time and along its path floodedthousands of settlers into Creek Territory and the State of Alabama.

In1830 the Creek Indian Territory in East Alabama was ceeded to the UnitedStates.  In 1832 the Alabama Legisltureincorporated the newly aquired Creek land into the State of Alabama creatingseveral counties, including Macon County. At that time Macon also included parts of Lee and Chambers Counties.

Themass immigration along the Federal Road lasted until around 1850.  If you have traced your ancestors to earlyMacon County, there is a good chance your ancestors traveled in a wagon alongthe Federal Road.  Today, descendants ofthosse early settlers are scattered throughout the United States.
