Lengyel - Lengel - Lengle - Langle

Differentiating the LENGYEL Lines in Hungary and Beyond
  • 17 members

About us

The major goal of this group project is to obtain as many LENGYEL members as possible, thereby differentiating as many male lineages with this surname as we can. LENGYEL is the 60th most common surname in Hungary today. All Hungarian cities have multiple LENGYEL lineages. Many villages in Hungary also have more than one LENGYEL family: are these families related? That question is still debated around shots of palinka or glasses of wine or beer. Usually the memory has been lost to time. Y-DNA analysis can now assist us in discovering which LENGYEL lineages are the same and which are different. Today, Lengyel in Hungarian means 'Pole; Polish.' However, it once referred to a Germanic tribe --the Vandals / Vendel(s)-- instead of to a Slavic people. The name is cognate with Vandal/Vendel, Veneti (namesake of Venice), and Wend. Likewise, the meaning of the ethnic name Wend shifted over time; today they are a Western Slavic people in Germany, closely related to the Poles. Anyone around the world with surname LENGYEL, as well as related (or coincidental) variants like LANGLE, LANGEL, LENGLE, LENGEL, LENDYEL, LENDLE, or LENDEL is more than welcome to join this group, even if your male lineage is not known to be Magyar. Also, any Hungarians or Hungarian-Americans (or -Canadians, -Australians, etc.) with known or potential roots in greater Poland are also welcome to join and to compare their haplotype (string of STR markers) with those in the group.
