About us

The Lefebvre surname is occupational, there are many variations of the spelling of the surname in the project. Many are from different countries and haplogroups, but all seem to go back to some form of the Latin root word for Iron, Ferrum. Our surname origins most likely came from being the Blacksmith or Iron worker of the community.   All  variations are welcome here.

We currently have Lefebvre's from Belgium, Germany, France, England, America and Canada in the Project. Most of us are French Canadian though, so I will start there.

The French Canadian Lefebvre surname derives from faber or the old French spelling of fevre. It is Latin for craftsman.

There are many French Canadian Lefebvre's in the project who are not closely related to each other.  The French Canadian Lefebvre's in particular come from an endogamous community which complicates any attempt to sort out different branches with autosomal (atDNA) testing alone.  Because of this, YDNA testing where possible should  be a crucial part of any DNA analysis of your French Canadian heritage.

To complicate matters further, name changes are not unusual with French Canadian's.  My French Canadian line started out as Lefebvre. Some of them added a dit Descoteaux (of the Hills) making the surname Lefebvre dit Descoteaux. Then some of them splintered off into Cotes, Descote, Decota and Hill.

If you are a YDNA match to a French Canadian Lefebvre in the project and your surname is different, it's entirely possible they simply changed the spelling. It does not necessarily mean there is a break in the surname or a MPE (miss attributed parentage).
