About us

If you have DNA tested, you should join—this kaiwhakapapa group is here to support Kāi Tahu whānui who want to use DNA testing as a tool to strengthen our shared stories and identity. We do not care about your ethnicity estimate. You do not need to be registered with Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, though you are encouraged to do so ASAP. You can upload your results from 23andMe, AncestryDNA, or MyHeritage instead of buying a new test from FamilyTreeDNA. Those other companies only offer "autosomal testing" for close-cousin matching. Helpful for adoptees or anyone whose recent ancestors are not well-remembered by living family members. If you are more interested in deeper history with Y-DNA and mtDNA tests, to trace pre-colonial era and ancient tīpuna, tracing migratory and archeaological patterns for hapū, then this is THE group for you! Likewise, this will aid in finding hapū connections for 1848 kaumātua where they may be forgotten, or connections between whānau groups whose memories have not survived into the 21st century. If, based on your DNA results, you think you might be Kāi Tahu but don't know for sure, then please click an administrator's name on the left and email as many details as you can. For tikanga reasons, we cannot accept join requests from unconfirmed Kāi Tahu.
