Three Primary Y-DNA Genetic Families (so far)

Last Updated 11 Dec 2016 by Steve Fanning

The project is still fairly new, but has come a long way in the last year! I started it summer 2015 as I was researching my Justice ancestry and discovered there was no existing surname project. There is a lot of great genealogical work out there on the Justices, but also a lot of confusion due to common names/locations, holes in the paper trail, and surname spelling changes. My I hope is that this DNA project can couple the science with the paper trail and provide new insights, which I believe we have already done and will continue to deliver.

There are three primary genetic families that our Y-DNA evidence (i.e. paternal line) has revealed so far. Based on genealogical records, these three genetic families come mainly from three common ancestors (i.e. DNA alone cannot yet group our results by specific common ancestors). These common ancestors helped shape early America. Genetic Family 01 has Scandinavian DNA and appears to have come from Sweden and settled in early Delaware (i.e. New Sweden colony). Although many amateur genealogists confuse this family with the other two genetic families, data from this project definitively proves that this genetic family is unrelated (within a genealogical time frame).

  1. Johann Gustafsson (c1618 Sweden - 1682 Philadelphia PA) is believed to be the patriarch of our Justice NC/GA/AL line. The circumstantial evidence suggests this is the case, but we are still waiting for Y-DNA confirmation from a known direct male descendent from Johann.

Genetic Family 03 came from England and settled in early Virginia.

  1. William Justice (c1625 England - 1664 VA) m. Mary Frame c1656

Genetic Family 04 came from England and settled in early Halifax MA and Halifax County VA.

  1. John Justice (c1696 England - 1766 Halifax Co VA) m. Mary Moore c1728

We also have many others that have tested and are from different genetic families. We are looking for more data to further understand the genealogy of these lines and better group them into genetic families.

Genetic Family Grouping Standard

Last Updated 10 Dec 2015 by Steve Fanning

Below is the criteria we will use to determine genetic family grouping:

  1. Haplogroup & subclade (e.g. R-M269)
  2. Surname variant (e.g. Justice, Justis)
  3. 37+ marker test
  4. FTDNA Genetic Distance (GD) <= 2 for 37 markers and <= 5 for 67 markers (compared to group's modal haplotype)
  5. FTDNA TiP >= 80% at 24 generations (compared to group's modal haplotype)

The modal haplotype is the most common haplotype for that genetic family (listed in red text below). Ideally the haplotype used in the genetic distance and TiP comparisons is an exact match to the modal haplotype and has a solid paper trail.

Note that members that do not have a Justice surname or variant are usually left ungrouped unless there is a solid 37+ marker DNA match with a Justice member (including potentially SNP test confirmation). In this case, it would be probable that there was a non-paternity event (NPE) somewhere along the direct male line going back to 1300 (the approximate date when surnames began to be commonly used). It is also possible to be related via a common ancestor before the common usage of surnames. Otherwise, it is likely the proposed match is actually just a chance finding of convergence. One can read more about matching with dissimilar surnames at the ISOGG.

Member Paternal Pedigrees

For members who submitted them, our paternal pedigrees are listed below, grouped by Y-DNA genetic family and genealogical information. Note that the DNA evidence only proves the groupings by genetic family. Any patriarchal information below is based on genealogical information (i.e. paper trail). These pedigrees were voluntarily submitted by our members. You can use this information to more easily connect your family tree to a given DNA result (or help others correct their pedigree). The kit number corresponds to the number you will find in the results tables under the "DNA Results" link on the left. If you are a member and have not submitted your pedigree yet, please email the admin team as this information is very useful to others. If you are concerned about privacy, consider only submitting starting from your grandparents or even great-grandparents to as far back as you can confidently go.
