About us

The group was established to welcome descendants of John Daniels of New London, Connecticut who have taken Autosomal, Y-DNA and/or Mitochondrial DNA tests. Many male Daniels in the group have taken Y-DNA tests, either Y-37 to Y111 marker tests or the most advanced BigY700 test.

In 2020, several male Daniels with descent from John Daniels of New London, CT, three with descent from John Daniels of Chester County, PA, a McDonald and a Houlihan all purchased BigY700 tests. There were close matches at the previous testing level of Y37 to Y111. Every one of those individuals were initially tested to the  I-BY44944 haplogroup and there were many BigY matches within the group. After FamilyTree DNA analyzed all the new information from the testing, every individual except for our Houlihan tester was moved to a new Haplogroup, I-BY44939.

I-BY44939 is further down the tree from the I-M170 Haplogroup; testers below the BigY700 level will show a I-M170 Haplogroup.

John Daniels of New London, CT first appears in New London records when he is granted a tract of land in 1663 as John Daniel. He was born Abt. 1640, died 1709/10 and his place of origin was unknown. John Daniels of Chester County, PA was born Abt. 1710 and died in 1759. The wills of John and his brother, James Daniel made bequests to siblings, nieces and nephews in the Kingdom of Ireland. The surname was sometimes spelled as Dannel in Ireland.

The BigY700 testing results indicate that both groups had a common ancestor in Ireland. Since the Chester County Daniel family belonged to a Presbyterian Church, this would suggest that they were Scots-Irish, who first migrated from Scotland to Ireland before immigrating to the Pennsylvania.

There is a McDonald line with an earliest known ancestor who was born in 1797 in Vermont; BigY700 results also group this individual in I-BY44939.

It appears that the Houlihan line had an origin in County Cork in Ireland.

Y-DNA testing has also identified different Daniels lines not related to the above groups. One line descends from Robert Daniel of Dedham, Massachusetts and another from a MackDaniel line from Groton, CT.

Autosomal DNA results show many members in the group with multiple matches with other members with New London County, Connecticut lines. Several members have multiple connection to families in East Hampton, Suffolk County, New York. A Mitochondrial DNA line has proved descent from Mary Duercant, born in the Netherlands. She married Lion Gardiner there, before they immigrated to Connecticut and finally to Suffolk County, New York.
