About us

We are looking for MEN WHO STILL CARRY A REGISTERED HUGUENOT SURNAME and WOMEN WHOSE MAIDEN NAME WAS A REGISTERED HUGUENOT SURNAME. Surnames must be listed in a Huguenot Society registry of surnames, either in the US or in another Country. Participants must have knowledge of their Huguenot lineages and be willing to post a Family Tree and a Surnames List on their FTDNA main page. MEN must have a Y-DNA test, preferably at the 111-marker level. The BIG Y test is also recommended. MEN and WOMEN may optionally have a Family Finder test (or have transferred autosomal DNA test results from another company to FTDNA and paid the $19 "unlock" fee). Men and women are welcome to do a mitochondrial Full Sequence DNA test, but this is optional. This information will be used to identify the possible geographic origins of each Huguenot lineage in France and to track their migration across the United States and other countries. This Geographic DNA Project uses Y-DNA in conjunction with lineage information gathered through “traditional” or “records-based” genealogy to answer the following questions: (1) Is the surname of my immigrant Huguenot ancestor registered with a Huguenot Lineage Society, such as the National Huguenot Society or any of the various state Huguenot Societies? (2) Can I determine from which geographical region in France my Huguenot lineage originated based on my Y haplogroup? (3) How can I use the information I have gathered about my Huguenot lineage using traditional, records-based genealogy to track the geographical locations in the United States (or other counties) where my Huguenot ancestors settled? (4) How can I use autosomal DNA test results to find others who are genetically related to me and share my Huguenot surname?
