About us

The intent of the Holbrook Project is to assist members in genealogical research of their family lines, primarily through the gathering and analysis of DNA data.We use autosomal DNA (au DNA) and Y DNA tests primarily. The Big Y 700 test is preferred. With less expense STR tests can be useful to predict Y haplogroups. The STR 37 test is recommended. Mitochondrial DNA (at DNA) can also be used to confirm near family relationships.

  1. Connect Holbrook family lines that share a common ancestor with the aid of au DNA and Y DNA. Determine the relationships between family lines on the Y DNA haplotree through Big Y SNP testing.

  2. Discover how many different genetic lineages carry the Holbrook surname and how these families originated. Did they become Holbrooks when inherited surnames came into use in England between 1200 CE and 1450 CE or through later adoptions or name changes?

  3. Encourage testers from each known family line to test with the Big Y 700 to refine the Y haplotree for Holbrooks. Tests from two near relatives can define a new haplotree branch. Y SNP mutations average about one per three generations.

  4. Trace the origins of name variants
