Hoffmann
Variants: Hoffman, Hofmann, Hofman
German, Jewish (Ashkenazic): status name from German Hof(f) ‘manor farm’ + Mann ‘man’ denoting the steward of a farm or estate.
Originally, this was a status name for a farmer who owned his own land as opposed to holding it by rent or feudal obligation, but in the early modern period the name came to denote the manager or steward of a manor farm, in which sense it is extremely frequent throughout central and eastern Europe; also as a Jewish name, since many Jews held managerial positions on non-Jewish estates. This name is widespread throughout central and eastern Europe, not only in German-speaking lands.

Hoffman
Variants: Hofman
1 Jewish (Ashkenazic), English: variant (Jewish) or anglicized spelling of Hoffmann.
2 Dutch: occupational name denoting a farm labourer or a gardener, someone who worked at a hof ‘manor farm’.
