About us

Back in the 12th/13th Century, Walter de Henley wrote a book called "The Art of Husbandry". Walter lived in Kent, and over the following two or three hundred years the Hendley family may be found in the town of Cranbrook, in the same county. Nowadays there are people bearing the names Hendley, Henley, Henly (and a lot of other variants) in different parts of England, mainly in the south. In the 1881 census the surname HENLEY was recorded predominately in London, Surrey and Sussex, with a significant number also in Staffordshire; HENLY was recorded mainly in Wiltshire, Sussex and London, with HENDLEY mainly in Hampshire and Staffordshire. My own family of HENLY can be traced back in Wiltshire to 1520, but I suspect that before then the family lived in Berkshire.
