At least 35 Henckel immigrants resided in America prior to 1800, the best-known being the Rev. Anthony Jacob Henckel who came in 1717. Henckel families also emigrated from Germany during the 19th Century and from the Volga region of Russia prior to the Russian Revolution in 1917. This later group descends from immigrants in the 1760's from Budingen and Russflau, Germany. Are the many Henckel families related? For the past 100 years Henckel historians, using both court documents and family stories, have compiled genealogies of many of the Colonial Henckel families. Unfortunately, records for some are sparse and results inconclusive. This study provides a tool towards discovering the relationships of 21st Centurey Henckels of many spellings. One interesting discovery from our Y-DNA studies is that four Colonial Henckel families are related: 1749 immigrant Philip Hinckel; Joseph Hinkle killed 1792-93 at Covalt Station, Ohio; Christopher Hinkle of Belmont County, Ohio; and Henry Hinkle of Union County, Illinois. The challenge is to use traditional research methods to discover their kinship.
