About us

The Hazelwood surname is English in origin. Three locations in England called Hazelwood are in Cambridgeshire, Derbyshire and Suffolk. The surname Hazelwood, along with its variants, may have been given to those who lived or migrated from any of these three areas or from people who lived near woods of hazelnut trees. As surnames were being established in England, several unrelated individuals might have taken the name Hazelwood.

The Hazelwood FTDNA Project started December 8, 2005. This project can provide a gathering point for the various Hazelwood / Hazlewood / Haselwood genealogists to compare genetic and genealogical data. With DNA testing, we can determine which Hazelwood lines are related within a genealogical time frame and which ones are not.

Anyone descended from a Hazlewood / Hazlewood / Haselwood lineage who has elected to take or has already taken at least a 12 marker test from Family Tree DNA can participate in the Hazelwood FTDNA Project. Because the six participants so far tested are in the most common haplogroup, the R1b Haplogroup, it is recommended that new participants take the 37 marker test.
