Big Y 700
FTDNA's powerful new Big Y 700 test has given us great new insight into our Hatchcock common ancestor.  The new test uses both SNPs and STRs unlike the earlier generation of testing that used only STRs.  The SNP analysis is able to show definitive lineages from a common ancestor.  If you have done an STR Panel in the past (e.g. Y-37, Y-111), please consider upgrading to Big Y 700.  FTDNA routinely runs sales during different holiday seasons including Valentines Day, Father's Day, Mother's Day and Christmas.  If you would like to upgrade but cost is an issue, please contact the project administrators.

Project Administrator Access
In order to get the most out of your Y-DNA test, please update the access level for project administrators to Advanced.  FTDNA uses information provided in your account in its algorithms for the Discover Reports.  This includes the tester date of birth, last known paternal ancestor name and dates of birth and death and country of birth.  They also rely on the tester to link their Y-dna matches to their FTDNA family tree.  By providing Advanced access to the project administrators, you can be sure that these data points will be kept up to date.  To update the access, go to Group Projects on the toolbar, select Manage Group Projects.  On the Project Preferences page, click the pencil icon under Actions.  On the Group Administrator Access box, scroll down to the Access Level Settings to update the accesses.  If you prefer to make these updates yourself and need any help, please contact the project administrators.

Opting in to share your Project Profile
In Account Settings, on the Project Profile tab, please opt in to Project Profile Sharing. This will ensure that your results display in project reports with your reported surname, haplogroups, earliest known ancestors, ancestral locations, and DNA results. Otherwise your results will only display with a lock icon.

Setting a Beneficiary for your Account
As genealogists, we well understand that our time here is limited.  To ensure that your account can be accessed after your death, be sure to set a beneficiary on your account.  To do so, go to your Account Settings.  In Account Settings, on the Account Information tab, on the Beneficiary Information tab, you can designate a person or a Group Project as the beneficiary of your account and remaining dna sample.

Tester Date of Birth
Ensure that your account has the Tester's date of birth updated on the Account Settings Page, on the Contact Information tab.

Add Earliest Known Ancestor
Be sure to update your Earliest Known Paternal Ancestor on the Account Settings Page, on the Genealogy tab.  FTDNA provides an example of the format for this information below the Name line.

Add a Family Tree
Adding a family tree to FTDNA and linking your Y-DNA matches to it will greatly improve the results of your Y-DNA test.  FTDNA uses this information in its algorithm for the Big Y Discover Reports.  If you need any help with this, contact the administrators
