About us

The Hatfield DNA project was started in 2005. Surnames that are included in the project are: Hatfield, Hartsfield, Hadfield, Hatfill, Attfield, Hetfelod, and Hadvelt.  Males with the surname of Hetfield, Hartfield, and Hartzfelder are welcome and encouraged to join the project.

The DNA test is easy and painless. You simply rub a swab over the inside of your cheek and mail the kit back to FamilyTree DNA. They are the only company that tests male Y-DNA for genealogical purposes, and groups them into databases.

Women are not able to participate directly; however, they can get a Hatfield father, brother, uncle, nephew, or cousin to get tested.

The purpose of the Hatfield DNA Project is to create a database that will enable us to identify the various families bearing the name of Hatfield, or its variant surnames. The results may make it possible to tell which families are connected in the male line, and as the database grows, to differentiate between branches within each family. DNA testing is not a substitute for traditional paper genealogy research. Genetic testing can often lead the way in getting past “brick walls” by suggesting a direction for the paper research to go. Though DNA results alone cannot prove the paper trail, they can help to back up that research, and a negative result can certainly disprove many incorrect assumptions.

The males who have been tested are grouped by Haplogroup and their earliest Hatfield (or variant surname) is listed, if known. If you suspect a Misattributed Parentage Event (MPE) or discover that you must have had an MPE in your lineage, please contact me if you have questions. If your surname is not Hatfield or any other of the variant surnames listed above, please tell us why you've joined the Hatfield project or why you would like to join the project. Please understand that the results shown on our website are ONLY Y-DNA results. We do not publish a list of autosomal (Family Finder) DNA Results, as there is no way to group them. You should look at your own matches to find common ancestors or cousins.

We also do not display mtDNA results.

We would like to get descendants of William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield to get Y-DNA tested.

Please email Elaine Hatfield Powell at Hatwelle@aol.com if you have questions.
