The family name GUTENSTEIN exists since 1841 (in Usingen, Hessen), prior to which it was LIEBMANN and/or LEVI. Supposedly there are (at least) 2 different lines, one Jewish and the other one Christian (or maybe evangelical) which apparently have the same origins - the town of GUTENSTEIN in the upper Danube valley in Baden-Württemberg.
