Several U.S. Goodgion families stem from the union of one William Goodgion (b.ca. 1775 of SC and Sarah L. Cooke (b: 17 Mar 1781 in Chaptico, St Mary's Co, MD) who married just before 1800 in South Carolina and raised their family in Maury Co, Tennessee. In fact, from this union, a branch changed their surname to Goodgine.
Through research, many documents have spelled the GOODGION surname a variety of ways. Possibly because the name is a bit unusual, or maybe the geographic location in which our ancestors lived, dictated how it was pronounced, leading to the way it was written. Many say ‘Good-gin’ – but, there are others who pronounce it ‘Good-gine,’ ‘Good-john,’ and ‘Good-join.’
Also, there are other groups who seem obviously linked to Goodgion, though there is no real paper trail to prove it.
Consider the Goodgion family in the New England states. Their ancestors lived in New York and Pennsylvania. Most likely, we have a common ancestor.
Several Goodjion/Goodjoin families live in South Carolina, Virginia and New Jersey. Are they part of our extended family?
Plus, quite a few Gudgeon families dot the map from New York to California.

In Europe, there are also families with the surname Gudgeon, Gudgin and Gudgion. Although, Goodgion has not been successfully connected with any of them through genealogical researching. A definite project for the future!
