About us

The goal of this project is to prove that, in the words of John Godley, Lord Kilbracken of Ireland, "All Godleys are Cousins".

Also to prove that many Godby/Godbey ancestors were really Godleys originally.

"William Baxter Godbey of Pulaski, Kentucky [born 3 June 1833] , was an evalgelical Methodist whose autobiography, published in Cininnati in 1909, can now be found on the Web. It provides us with the following information.

"The last time I ever saw my grandfather was while I was his presiding elder. I visited him when 96 years old, when he had me assist him in making an invoice of his family, which at that time numbered 500 souls, twenty-five of whom were licensed preachers of the Gospel. As names have originated from circumstances, of course our family received its name from the fact that of their eminent godliness, the original name being "Godly". Some one at some time writting it happened to place the 'l' by a 'b'."

Thus the "John Godly" once found in Virginia and evenually discarded after much frustration may not have been a misprint but an original or throwback!

I just found the proof in Pulaski, Kentucky. William Baxter Godbey's father was John G.Godbey [born in Virginia in 1801 and died Missouri in 1885 according to the Mormon database who married a Kelly --W.B says that was, indeed ,his mother's maiden name -- so this is unquestionably the right person]

Around the time that William Baxter Godley's grandfather [the Mormon's say William Godbey born Va 1781 -- track it all down yourself -- that would be ca 1876], had compiled his Family invoice , the Mormon data base (also 1880 census) contains several "Godley"s living in Pulaski, KY. Do check it yourself. Although Edward and Hannah's John et al were also living in Kentucky, this rougue bunch in Pulaski, KY can only have come Virginia with the Godbeys....... Bet on it!"
