About us
The Giles / Gile surname project facilitates the discovery of shared paternal ancestry in these names and variants thereof, as listed on our Surnames page, through Y-DNA testing. Please see our Background page for further information on membership requirements.
The Giles surname (or variants thereof) is found in many separate Y-DNA lineages. The project aims to group members - on its Y-DNA Results Overview page - by each one having its own (roughly) second millennium stem. This ideally requires testing at least to FTDNA's Y-DNA111 level (but better, its Big Y-700); however we will attempt to provisionally place those who have taken only the introductory Y-DNA37 test*. Those who have a subclade assigned from autosomal testing (FTDNA's Family Finder, or transfer in from another company) are asked to test their Y-DNA further with one of these three levels of Y-DNA testing.
* Or one of the Y-DNA12, Y-DNA25 and Y-DNA67 tests no longer offered by FTDNA.
