The surname Garvey appears to be the Anglicized spelling of the Irish names of several unrelated septs of medieval Ireland. The purpose of the Garvey DNA study is to try to identify the specific Garvey Y chromosome signatures corresponding to each of those places of origin. Additional lines may be found for McGarveys from County Donegal and the Scottish surname of Garvie.
The Original study was performed by Dennis Garvey around 2010 and the results of that can be found here: https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~dgarvey/genealogy/DNA/results2.html The groupings in this project started from those identified by Dennis Garvey and we have added more results over time. One additional McGarvey group based on results from four men who can trace their ancestry to Lissan has been added since then, thus splitting the McGarveys into two sub-groups whose MRCA is around 2000 years ago, one from western Donegal the other from Lissan.
