About us
The Foote project at FamilyTreeDNA is public and open to all.
Initially, the most common haplotype for those joining this project was R-M269. R-M269 is a broad haplogroup, which branched off from R-P297 and the rest of mankind about 14,000 years ago, plus or minus 2,350 years.
Since 2018, some project members have received results from more intensive Y-chromosome analysis (e.g., Big-Y). Others have received a “Third Party Y-DNA Haplogroup”. This utilizes additional information from autosomal DNA done by another testing company.
Initially, a cluster of 11 project members was identified, who had Y-DNA matches amongst themselves, and were descendants of Nathaniel Foote, the settler b. 1593, and by extension John Foote b. 1530, since Nathaniel Foote b.1593 was the grandson of John Foote b. 1530 of Royston, Hertfordshire, England. Since then, 4 members have been assigned Haplogroup R-Z18, which is a downstream branch of R-M269. One member has been assigned to R-U106. Two members have been assigned to R-FTD59112 on the basis of Big Y testing. This is a refined haplogroup, again a downstream branch of R-M269. R-M269, R-Z18, and R-FTD59112 are all determined by different methodologies. Additionally, FamilyTreeDNA began offering Y-DNA haplogroups for individuals who had FamilyFinder autosomal DNA results on their site. This resulted in 3 additional individuals identified with R-Z18 haplogroup who were descendants of Nathaniel Foote.
One project member with earliest ancestor Nathaniel Foote b. 1593 has the J-M172 haplogroup.
Descendants of Richard Walter Foote 1630-1690’s would also be expected to belong to this group, since Richard Walter Foote b. 1630 was thought to have been a great-great-grandson of John Foote b. 1530.
One individual is a descendant of Richard Walter Foote b. 1630 and his son Richard Foote of Virginia b. 1666. His haplogroup is I-M253. He has a Y-DNA match with two individuals, LLF, and LF who are also descendants of Richard Foote of Virginia b. 1666, who are not members of the Foote project, but who are in the FamilyTreeDNA database, who also are of the I-M253 haplogroup; therefore this is a confirmed DNA-ancestral link. Recently, LF was re-assigned to I-Z141. This is evidence against the relatedness of Nathaniel Foote and Richard Foote.
Pasco Foote of Salem, Massachusetts, b. about 1597, died 1670, has been suspected of being a close relative of Nathaniel Foote b. 1593. One project member, IN121650, who is a descendant of Pasco Foote 1597-1670, is in the R-M269 haplogroup, but does not have matches with descendants of Nathaniel Foote. He does have a match with another descendant of Pasco Foote, Kit # 541960, who is in the project. This individual was recently re-assigned to haplogroup R-DF23. This suggests that Pasco Foote and Nathaniel Foote were not brothers, as has been speculated in the past; nor were they close relatives.
A descendant of William Giles Foote 1540-1600 from Dorset, England, has had a Big Y test resulting in a haplogroup of R-FT406160.
A descendant of Thomas Foote, b. 1615 in Devon, England, has a haplogroup of R-M269.
A descendant of Peter Foote, b. 1926 in London, England has a haplogroup of R-M269.
A descendant of William Foote, b. 1807 in England, has a haplogroup of R-M269.
A descendant of Gilbert Foote (no further information available) has a haplogroup of R-M269.
This being a genetic genealogy project, it should be stated that the Foote surname has been adopted in some circumstances, without direct patrilineal descent from a Foote forebearer; likewise, the Foote surname has been changed on occasion, so that a person of a different surname may still be a direct descendant of a Foote ancestor. This is the case with a few of the project members.

Figure 1. Cluster analysis of Y-DNA matches for haplotype R-M269. X- indicates a Y-DNA match between the kits in that column and row. Kit Number refers to FamilyTreeDNA kits. Since, three additional members have joined the project and are in the cluster: Kit # 991835, who matches with 121524, 392458, 534550, 55839, N74042,774789, 850820, and 984984; and Kit # 949598, who matches with the same kits and Kit # 1009305 whose matches are identical to #991835.
