About us

There are two paternal lines represented in this Y-DNA surname project. One presents as R-M269 with origins in Northern Ireland. The other presents a G-M201 with origins in the Midlands, England. One goal is to further delineate these two branches because one person in each group does not establish a trend. For the England Flavells (G-M201), a simple count of births and marriages was done for the surname Flavel (16th century England based on an Ancestry search). The Flavells had an early presence in the counties surrounding Birmingham, England. The highest concentration of 16th century Flavells was recorded in Warwickshire, with ten Flavell marriages and thirteen Flavell baptisms. There is a 50% probability that all Midlands Flavells are related. Another goal is to extend the Y-DNA tree into the modern era because FTDNA dates G-M201 to 25,000 BCE. The concentration of G falls below 5% in the British Isles. However, in Wales, a distinctive G2a3b1 type (DYS388=13 and DYS594=11) dominates there and pushes the G percentage of the population higher than in England. For Flavell (R-M269), the surname seems to have arrived in County Armagh and adjacent areas after the Norman Invasion of Ireland in 1169, when many Anglo-Norman families settled in the region. The SNP R-BY115264 is at the root of this paternal line and dates to 1000 CE. It is also associated with the Beaumont family of England (https://www.familytreedna.com/public/BeaumontWestYorkshire?iframe=ydna-results-overview). There are several modern branches. One branch (Flavell, 935316) immigrated to the United States in 19th century. Other branches may have immigrated to the U.S. earlier. Another branch (McDonald, BP24344) moved from Northern Ireland to Manchester, England late in the 18th century, then later immigrated to New Zealand. Another branch immigrated from Northern Ireland to Australia.
