About us

The goal of the FlandrX Family DNA Project is to clarify the connections between the descendants of Jacques Flandreau (1668-1726), the Huguenot immigrant, who arrived in New Rochelle, Westchester County, New York in the 1690's.  The surnames of Jacques' patrilineal descendants in North American include Flandreau, Flandrau, Flandro, Flandreaux, Flandrow, Flandraw, and (believe it or not) Flatbush.  Jacques' immediate family is known, and his mid-19th, 20th, and 21st century descendants leave us considerable documentation.  However, the 18th and early 19th century story of the Flandreau family is less well-documented, making it difficult to trace a descendant of Jacques Flandreau directly back to him.  With luck and the participation of patrilineal Flandreau descendants, it should be possible to untangle some of the different branches of the family and get a clearer picture of how they all connect.

We also want to explore the lineage of the Flandro branch of the family, descended from William Fowler Flandro (1826-1853), an orphan, and hopefully connect them at last to their Flandreau ancestors in Westchester County.  Likewise, it is well worth exploring the genetic heritage of the many Flandreau and Flatbush descendants of the Civil War veteran, jack-of-all-trades, and unrepentant bigamist, States Barton Flandreau (1842-1922).

The project will also gladly explore the genetic connections between the Flandreaus of America and related families, such as Flandreaus from other European lines, and members of the Flanders or Flandrois families.  Jacques Flandreau was born in La Chataigneraie in Vendée near La Rochelle, France.  It is speculated that Jacques' ancestors came to that region during the period when the wetlands around La Rochelle were being reclaimed for farmland, using labor and expertise from Flanders.  It would be fascinating to see if that immigration pattern is supported by genetic connections to other Flemish families.
