The Erisman surname (and all variants such as: Arisman, Earisman, Ehresman, Ehresmann & Ehrisman) is thought to have originated in Switzerland. A number of Erisman progenitors immigrated to America including:
Melchior Erisman - first appears in Lancaster Co., PA in 1717. His descendants comprise the largest Erisman family in America.
John Erisman - first appears in Lancaster Co., PA in 1744 and died in 1745. It is not known if any descendants exist.
George Jacob Erisman - most likely the Georg Jacob Ehresmann who arrived in Philadelphia, PA in 1752 and later settled in Lancaster Co., PA. His son, Jacob Arisman, moved to VA and is the progenitor of the largest Arisman family in America.
Andrew Erisman - most likely the Andreas Ehresman who arrived in Philadelphia, PA in 1765 and later settled in Lancaster Co., PA. His descendants are the other appreciable Erisman family of Lanaster Co.
Daniel Erisman - first appears in Daupin Co., PA in 1794. He is thought to be a son of George Erisman but this link has not been proven.
David Erisman - was born 1 Feb 1811 and resided in Marietta, Lancaster Co. PA. He is thought to be a descendant of Melchior but this link has not been proven.
John Erisman - was born in 1826 and died 21 Sep 1864 as a result of wounds received while serving in the IN Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He is thought to be a descendant of Melchior but currently only anecdotal evidence is available.
The ancestry and possible connections between these and other American Erisman immigrants has not yet been determined.
