About us

Between 1887 and 1923 members of seven families named Dvorkis emigrated to America from within a 50 mile radius of the Vinnytsia district of the Russian Empire (in today's Ukraine). The families were fruitful, and today their descendants live throughout the U.S. and beyond. One family came from Tulchyn and settled in Boston. Another family emigrated from Illintsi (then called Linitz) and settled in New York City. Two families came from Tomashpil -- one settled on the lower East Side of Manhattan and one in Wilmington, Delaware. Another came from Khmil'nyk and settled in the Bronx. These five families spelled the surname Dworkis in America. Another family, which traces its roots to Tulchyn, settled in Milwaukee and spelled its name Dworkus. A seventh family also came from Tulchyn, settled in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, and changed the surname to Davis. Are all these families related? Do they all share a common male ancestor? This surname project proposes to research these questions via Y-DNA. Patrilineal male descendants of the seven families are invited to join the project and test their Y-DNA. Other Dvorkis-derived families who trace their histories to this region are also encouraged to join the project.
