The Ui Maine Donnellans are in clustered groups in Galway, Roscommon and Clare. A large contingent is in north East Galway centred on Dunmore, Clonbern and Glenamaddy parishes with significant numbers in Tuam and Kilkerrin. The Dunmore and Clonbern families relate an oral tradition that they migrated there in the 17th century from the ancestral home in south Galway.

The Y DNA analysis should help see the connections between the various strands of the Ui Maine Donnellans and  how accurate the oral tradition is It will also see where the O'Donnellan sept rests within the larger Connachta family
